Music is an art and form of expression. In the past, some Nigerian entertainers built quite a reputation for making socially conscious music as they often criticized the corrupt government of the country using their songs.
One musician who also doubled as an activist is the late Afrobeat pioneer, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, who was bundled in and out of prison several times because of his songs.
In recent times, many musicians have started to infuse Afrobeat sound into their songs but they do not try to relate social messages in their lyrics. That is not the case for all of them however.
Talented Nigerian singer, actor and lawyer Folarin ‘Falz’ Falana, is one musician who has proven not to follow the bandwagon. He has made music in the past that brought important issues to the fore and he even faced some heat for it.
The singer dropped his fourth studio album on January 15, 2019, titled Moral Instruction and it includes songs such as Talk, Follow Follow, Johnny, Brother’s Keeper, to name a few.
Falz’s latest song ‘Talk’ has generated a lot of reactions from Nigerians, with people picking different aspects of the song to analyze.
The rapper was especially criticized for slut-shaming sex workers in his song. He was accused of criticizing women who sleep with men and expect to be paid but having nothing to say about the men who employ the services of sex workers.
In a private listening session of Falz’ new album ‘Moral Instruction’, Falz explained why he criticizes women who have sex and expect money in return.
He said he hates transactional sex which is why he sings against it. He also said that transactional sex leads to the objectification of women.
