The presidential candidate of Grassroots Development Party of Nigeria (GDPN), Dr. Davidson Akhimien, has said that visionary leadership remains key to Nigeria’s development.

Akhimien, who said this in Abuja after he was declared the party’s presidential candidate in next year’s elections, lamented the lingering poverty in Nigeria, stressing that the country has no reason to be poor, being blessed with natural and human resources that could be harnessed for the good of all.

While promising to change the sad reality if elected president, Akhimien said: “Visionary leadership, good governance remain elixir to Nigeria’s development.

“Nigerians from all walks of life have watched and have continued to lament over the decayed condition of our nation that has gradually decrease into abyss.”

The Edo State-born politician also frowned at the ranking of Nigeria among the world’s poverty capital, saying: “We are a nation endowed with natural resources.

I consider this a misnomer. When we continue to boast about how great our nature is, it is important to realise that our great nation today only indexed in potential.

“We need leadership that will harness these potentialities to achieve greatness in real and concrete terms.

When greatness does not translate to food on the table of the common man, meaningful employment and empowerment of mass majority of our people, especially with quality and affordable health care, quality education for optimal human capacity development, justice for all, irrespective of class, creed or clan, that greatness lives much to be desired.

“We have no business with poverty, as we are abundantly blessed,” he added.
