Barely two weeks after winning the Independence Day tournament, Mohammed Suleiman reinforced his reputation as a prolific golfer by emerging as the men’s gross champion at the 2018 Total Charity Golf Tournament held at IBB International Golf and Country Club, Abuja at the weekend.
Suleiman, a former Competition Secretary of the club, got over the line ahead of a pack of 150 golfers to seal the Total tournament with 75 gross.
Chinese Xu Hui held off Dipo Sanya with 38 stableford points to win the Men Best nett prize. Both players tied but Xu won on the countback rule. Chris Shaiyen stood alone in the third place with 37 points.
Also outstanding at the event was Samuel Anyamele, who chalked up 38 points to clinch the Veterans’ Prize. J. Ayu brushed aside Jummai Abdulahi by five points to win the Ladies Best Nett prize with 37 points, while Joy Ikwue shot 30 points to place third.
The participating golfers raised N1.2 million at the tournament, while the overall proceeds of N3 million was donated to two Abuja based charity homes - the Fortitude Children’s Home, Lugbe, which cares for vulnerable children and Anawim Home, Gwagalada, founded for adults and children with special needs. Each charity received N1.5 million.
The Managing Director of Total E&P, Mr. Nicholas Terraz said the tournament, which was conceived in 1995 to bring together golfers, business partners and other stakeholders for a weekend of great golf and networking, is in its 23rd year, and has become a platform for reaching out to the less privileged members of the society.
