•Targets 25m visitors, confirms Nigeria’s participation
Ahead of the global expo, scheduled for Dubai, United Arab Emirates come October 2020, the city will make available over 20 different technologies for the success of the programme.
The expo, which will run for six months, will be strengthened by technologies such as 5G, Artificial Intelligence (AI); Smart Robotics; Intelligent CCU; Internet of Things; Volunteer Management; Pixel Display, 8000 Wi-Fi Access Points; Mobility Pavilion Video Walls; 200kms of Fibre; Hyper Personalisation, Robert Concierge; Immersive technology; Intelligent Crowd Management, among others. Dubai, which confirmed Nigeria’s participation, said it is expecting over 180 countries with 25 million visitors, 70 per cent of which are to come from outside UAE.
According to Vice President, Applied Intelligence, Innovation and Future Technology, Expo 2020 Dubai, Iman Alomrani, in a chat with journalists, said in July 2018, the event became the first major commercial customer in the Middle East, Africa and South Asia (MEASA) region to access the 5G network, owing to its partnership with Etisalat.
Alomrani disclosed that 5G is about 20 times faster than 4G, featuring virtually no latency and ultra-low energy requirements.The Expo site, which nears completion, John said more than 80 per cent of it will live on as part of District 2020, stressing that all of Expo 2020’s buildings have been designed to meet or exceed LEED Gold standards for water and energy use.He revealed that the Expo Live innovation and partnership programme is allocating $100 million to promote global solutions that have potential to positively impact communities, the environment or both.
Now in its fourth cycle, the Expo Live’s flagship Innovation Impact Grant Programme has already awarded grants of up to $100,000 each to 70 projects from 42 countries.Alomrani said by embracing innovation in all its forms, the event will not only enable and empower visitors, but also leave a unique and lasting impression that will stay with them long into the future, “no matter who you are or where you are from.”
Alomrani disclosed that with an average of 150,000 visitors per day (non-peak), Expo 2020 will collaborate with its Premier Partner Siemens to encourage a seamless flow of people.According to her, solutions to be deployed include software that simulates crowd behavior, video analytics to count visitor numbers, and GPS and mobile device tracking to predict the number of people in a given area monitoring their mobility and ensuring safety.
She noted that Expo 2020’s premier partnership with Mastercard will include exploring the use of payment technologies including augmented and virtual reality, biometrics such as facial and fingerprint recognition, as well as new payment methods including contactless and wearable technologies.
The Vice President, Applied Intelligence, Innovation and Future Technology, disclosed that many of Expo’s buildings will be ‘smart’, with features that could include smart metering with digital feedback for energy and water consumption, and sensors that monitor the efficiency of utilities, climate conditioning and occupancy.
She said a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed by Expo 2020 and partners Siemens and DEWA to develop the region’s first solar-driven hydrogen electrolysis facility at the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park in Dubai.
According to her, the Dubai Metro Route 2020 link will be able to take 46,000 passengers per hour to and from the Expo site, She noted that Smart car parking services should allow barrier-free access, digital parking space allocation and guidance, and automatic detection of a visitor’s license plate or ID.
