There Is Now An App That Attacks Food Wastage

A Nigerian tech entrepreneur, Oscar Ekponimo has developed an that could tackle food wastage in Nigeria. This app called Chowberry will solve the problem of food inequality in Nigeria.

For Ekponimo, inventing the app was driven by a childhood of hunger. He said, "going without food for any person, for any child - it's destabilising, it shakes you to your core. I remember being a child and going without food and being able to have just one good meal in a day."

Chowberry connects people to food in the supermarket that would normally be wasted.

This app is very useful for charities because they can buy food at a good discount and feed more people while still ensuring that limited food is saved from the bin.

Presently, the app is being used by 35 retailers, Non-Governmental Organisations[NGOs] and other Organisations in Nigeria.

According to a study commissioned by the United Nations, one-third of food produced for consumption all over the world is lost or wasted.

This amounts to 1.3 billion tonnes a year. UN figures also suggest that one in nine of people across the globe go to bed without food although there is enough food in the world.
